OFAC Screening
Paying a sanctioned address can put your organization in legal trouble, and a crypto payment can’t be pulled back once it’s sent. Mezzanine screens every wallet address you hold against OFAC sanctions lists. OFAC Screening shows you the result for each one in a single list.
You’ll find it in the sidebar under Legal & Compliance → OFAC Screening.
Why screen addresses
Section titled “Why screen addresses”- A counterparty’s wallet turns out to be sanctioned. You find out before you pay it, not after.
- An address changes hands or gets listed later. Results are refreshed, so a wallet that was clear last quarter isn’t assumed clear forever.
- Someone asks how you check counterparties. The page gives you a dated result for every address, ready to show an auditor or your board.
How it works
Section titled “How it works”- Mezzanine screens each wallet address automatically. This covers wallets, Safes and exchange accounts across your contacts, your own entities and your teammates. There’s nothing to set up or start.
- The address itself is checked against the wallet addresses on OFAC’s sanctions lists.
- A result is kept for 30 days. After that, the address is screened again the next time it’s loaded.
- A flagged address can’t be paid. Mezzanine blocks payments to it, and won’t send it a wallet verification test.
When to use it
Section titled “When to use it”- Before paying a new counterparty, to confirm their address is Clear.
- When preparing for an audit or board review, to show every address has been screened.
- After you see a red shield next to an address anywhere in Mezzanine, to see the full picture.
Using the page
Section titled “Using the page”Three counts sit at the top:
- Addresses Tracked: every wallet address on the list.
- Active Hits: addresses currently flagged. This should be 0.
- Re-screens Due: addresses whose last result is over 30 days old.
Below them is the list. Search by name or address. Each row shows the owner’s name, the address, when it was Last Screened, and the Source (OFAC SDN). Click the name to open that account’s details.
| You see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | The address passed its last screening | Nothing |
| Flagged | The address matched a sanctions list | Don’t pay it. Raise it with whoever handles compliance |
| Re-screen due | The last result is over 30 days old | Nothing. It’s screened again automatically |
| Unscreened | No result yet, or screening couldn’t be completed | Reload the page later. If it stays this way, contact support |
Only wallet addresses appear here. Bank accounts aren’t on this list.
If some addresses are hidden
Section titled “If some addresses are hidden”The list only shows addresses you have permission to see. If you’re missing one of the permissions below, a box reads Some addresses aren’t shown
and names what you need for each kind of address. Until you have all three, Active Hits only counts the addresses you can see.
Good to know
Section titled “Good to know”- The same result shows everywhere. Next to a wallet address across Mezzanine there’s a shield icon. Hover it for the result, for example “Passed OFAC sanctions screening on date.” or
Flagged by OFAC sanctions screening. This wallet cannot receive payments.
- You can’t run a screen by hand. Screening and re-screening happen automatically.
- There’s no override for a flagged address. If you think a result is wrong, take it to your compliance lead before doing anything else.
